Sokoto Government Commissions N14 Billion Tamaje Water Project

In July 2025, Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto commissioned the Tamaje Water Project, a major township water scheme valued at more than N14 billion. This landmark project represents one of the largest investments in water infrastructure in Sokoto State's recent history and is part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure reliable water supply across the state.

**Project Scope and Impact**

The Tamaje Water Project is designed to serve densely populated areas of Sokoto metropolis that have historically faced water scarcity challenges. The project includes modern water treatment facilities, extensive distribution networks, and storage systems capable of serving hundreds of thousands of residents.

Prior to Governor Aliyu's administration, Sokoto and its environs suffered from acute water shortage, with the state water board forced to pump untreated water to public taps due to funding challenges. The new administration has made water infrastructure a top priority, recognizing that reliable water supply is fundamental to public health, economic productivity, and quality of life.

**Additional Water Projects**

The Tamaje Water Project is part of a broader portfolio of water infrastructure investments. The state government has awarded contracts for the completion of four additional major water schemes serving Old Airport, Mana, Rugar Liman areas, and township extensions.

These projects, initiated during previous administrations but stalled, are now at various stages of completion under Governor Aliyu's commitment to completing abandoned projects.

**Rural Water Access**

Beyond urban areas, the state government has continued an aggressive program of drilling new boreholes and rehabilitating existing ones across rural communities. This initiative aims to reduce the time and cost burden on households that traditionally trek long distances for water, while improving hygiene and public health outcomes.

**Public-Private Partnership Opportunities**

The success of the Tamaje Water Project demonstrates the viability of large-scale water infrastructure investments in Sokoto State. The state government has indicated openness to PPP arrangements for future water projects.
